About Siliguri
Siliguri is the third largest city in west Bengal and situated in the foothills of Eastern Himalayas on the bank of Mahananda River. Recently SIliguri has become an important commercial town which acts as a gateway to Darjeeling, other north-eastern states, Nepal and Bhutan. Area around Siliguri is known for tea plantations and good quality tea us exported to many countries from here.
Timber, Tourism and Tea are the main commercial activities of the region. Inexpensive handicrafts, cheap Chinese imported items and local artifacts are available for the shopaholic tourists. Siliguri
Wildlife and the parks around Siliguri such as Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary are worth seeing. Bengali cuisine is prevalent all over the Siliguri. Kosha Mangsho (a Bengali delicacy), fish fry and biryani are some dishes to be tried. The main festival of the region is celebrated in September-October named as Durga Puja. Beautifully decorated city with lightning and flowers and Idols of goddesses Durga are the enchanting things in the event.
New Jalpaiguri Junction railway station connects Siliguri with Gauhati in the north-east. As a tourist destination itself, Siliguri does not have much to offer, but acts as an important overnight halt for tourists heading to Darjeeling, other north-eastern states and Bhutan.
