The original construction was of uniform height of 14 feet, entirely surrounding the city, broken by gates into 54 suburbs, which were in turn walled. Of the 52 gates only 4 gates remain and 9 of the subordinate, ‘suburb’ gates. This gives the city a unique feel, and for the visitor, provides a means to navigate and investigate both the city and its heritage.
