About Vellai Pillayar Temple

The Vellai Pillaiyar Temple is located in a small hamlet called “Thiruvalanchuzhi” near Thanjavur. The main deity is Lord Shiva who is called as “Kapardiswarar” and his consort “Goddess Brihannayaki”. As per Hindu Mythology, a sage called Herander travelled to Nether Land through underground tunnel and bought the sacred River Cauvery to Earth and made the river flow towards Bay of Bengal. This happened in this village. The Vinayakar Statue in this temple looks like it was made up of white stone. As per myth, Lord Indra (head of Devas), framed a Vinayakar Statue out of sea sand and left it here. When he came back to take the Statue, it didn’t move and so a temple is built over the statue.
