About Chhota Imambara
Chota Imambara is a striking monument located in the city of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Otherwise termed as “Husainabad Imambara”, the Chhota Imambara was constructed by Nawab of Lucknow, Muhammed Ali Shah, in the year 1839.
It deserves a visit from all the art and history enthusiasts. The magnificent gold domes attract people from far off. In the front, you can also spot a small lake. On the either side, are two structures which are said to be small replicas of Taj Mahal. One of them serves as a mausoleum for four graves. The Hamam (bath enclosure) which was a part of water storage and cooling system, will also draw your attention. The silver throne in the hall also increases the grandeur of this place. The Arabic calligraphy which depicts religious quotes is certainly breathtaking. Despite of all these features, the most awe-inspiring one is the beautiful glass work in the form of chandeliers and glass lamps. It is a sight to behold when the chandeliers are lit during Moharram and the Imambara lives up to it's lesser known name of “The Palace Of Lights.”
Recently, the Chota Imambara has not been well kept and you can spot piles of garbage at the entrance. Moreover, Bara Imambara often over-shadows this place. Lucknow, being a city of many incredible monuments, if you are on a tight schedule, you might want to skip it. None the less, Chota Imambara is a wonderful combination of Indo-Islamic and Persian structural design. The best time to visit is October – March when the weather is not very hot.
