About Nine Arches Bridge, Demodara
Demodara Nine Arch Bridge is an engineering wonder of the early 20th century built and commissioned during the British Colonial period and World War II. It is an 80 feet tall and 300 feet long railway track that goes between Ella and Demodara. It is the largest bridge in Sri Lanka, called “The Bridge of the Sky”. The bridge has 9 arches which is why it is famously known as Nine Arch Bridge and translates as “Ahas namaye Palama” in Sinhala. The bridge is just 2 kilometers away from Ella so make sure to keep the windows open to view the spectacular surroundings.
