10 Lesser-Known Places Around Delhi for a Break
Ten getaway ideas from Delhi, with clearer trip styles, corrected place information and practical mountain and heritage travel advice…
In this guide
Delhi has no shortage of interesting places to visit, but it is also a useful starting point for a weekend or longer break. The plains, Aravallis and Himalayan foothills offer very different trips. Some destinations below are comfortable short breaks; others need a longer road journey or a proper trek plan. Do not treat them all as four-to-eight-hour drives.
Choose by trip style: Pinjore, Parwanoo, Nahan and Nalagarh are road-and-stay ideas; Mandawa and Samode suit a Rajasthan heritage break; Kanatal, Chindi and Jilling need more mountain travel time. Churdhar is a trek requiring a separate plan, not just another resort weekend.
1) Kanatal

When we talk about lush green forests, snow clad mountains, paths for walking , serene and soulful beauty of mother nature and one of the closest and lesser known places around Delhi, we are talking about Kanatal. A road journey of roughly 300 km from Delhi brings you to Kanatal, located in Uttarakhand and one of the unexplored hidden treasures. Located at a high altitude you may visit the place just to relax and enjoy the beauty of the place as it does not have many attractions to offer apart from Kodia jungle, Tehri Dam and the very old Surkunda Devi Temple. This small village suits a quieter hill stay. Arrange accommodation beforehand and check meal options, as facilities vary by location. Choose a permitted forest walk with local guidance; do not assume that every forest road is open to private vehicles.
2) Jilling

Jilling could be called a place for honeymooners because it gives them the seclusion they need, for the bachelors group who want to trek and explore the wild life, for the family who want a weekend getaway and spend a lazy weekend. To put it in a nutshell the Kumaon range of Uttarakhand has something for everyone. Some stays have a final walking approach, helping retain the quiet hill setting. Confirm the actual property access.
Jilling is a Kumaon hill-stay idea rather than a quick roadside attraction. Confirm the property’s actual approach: some stays require a final uphill walk from the road. Kathgodam can be a useful rail gateway, followed by road transport and that last approach. Check current trains through IRCTC instead of relying on an old named train or departure time.
3) Churdhar

Churdhar is a mountain trek in Himachal Pradesh, reaching about 3,647 metres, not a drive-up camping spot at 7,000 feet. Nohradhar is one starting point; route length, ascent and conditions need to be understood before setting out. The Sirmaur district Churdhar guide explains the approach. Confirm the current opening, local restrictions, guide and overnight arrangements; snow or bad weather can make an advertised seasonal window unreliable.
4) Chindi

Breathtaking views, dense forest, greenery and widespread apple orchards come together and the place was called Chindi. Located in Karsog Valley of Himachal Pradesh this small trace bearer of the British era is about 430 km from Delhi. Though being an offbeat hill station Chindi has its own charm and offerings. It takes you away from your routine life and rejuvenates you. It has a lot of scenic beauty to offer and also several temples. Check current weather, roads and local access before travelling. Kunhoo dhar that gives a complete 360 degree view of the area is a must see point here. Kunhoo Dhar’s broad mountain views are a highlight when the weather is clear. Check the local walking route and conditions before setting out.
5) Nahan

Nahan is a hill town in Sirmaur district, with temples, streets to wander and access to the wider Shivalik landscape. Suketi’s Shivalik Fossil Park is a separate outing nearby. Check the specific attraction’s visitor arrangements rather than relying on claims about spotless streets or a town-wide cantonment setting.
Plan Nahan as a road-based break, with time allowed for traffic leaving Delhi and the final hill approach. Choose accommodation according to its actual setting and distance from the places you want to see. A fixed five-hour promise is less useful than a realistic route and planned rest stops.
6) Nalagarh

Nalagarh lies in Solan district, near the Shivalik foothills, and offers greenery and a heritage-stay setting. Its fort and palace are the main architectural draw. Himachal Tourism dates the palace to 1421 and Raja Bikram Chand. Confirm current access to the property, whether visiting for a meal or staying overnight.
Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh is not Nawalgarh, the painted-haveli town in Rajasthan. Its fort heritage and position near the Shivalik foothills are the reasons to consider a stay. Gobind Sagar is a separate reservoir excursion, not a lake in the town. Check access to any heritage property, and choose your actual rail gateway and onward transfer from a live timetable.
7) Mandawa

Known for its grand haveli, forts and architecture, Mandawa is a small town in the Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. Unlike the rest of the offbeat locations this place is well connected with other places with good network of roads. The Mandawa fort is the biggest attraction here which was founded by Thakur Nawal Singh in 18th century. The fort now has been converted into a heritage hotel. Apart from that there are several other havelis here which makes the place resemble some open art gallery with lavish painted walls depicting splendid art.
A visit to Mandawa gives you a memorable heritage break with castles, forts, palaces paintings all around you. You can reach this destination conveniently by road which is an approximately 255 km from Delhi, depending on the route. A train from Delhi can also be taken but the last stop would be Jhunjhunu or loharu after which you need to take a taxi to Mandawa.
8) Parwanoo

Located at a distance of approximately 275 km from Delhi, Parwanoo is a city in solan district of Himachal Pradesh. This is one place that helps you relax and rejuvenates. Parwanoo welcomes you with warm hospitality and offers you a break away from your fast paced life. The resorts and hotels have a magnificent and breathtaking view to offer but you should not expect a five star treatment from the place. Everyone is laid back and relaxed and so should you while visiting Parwanoo.
While visiting Parwanoo, consider Yadavindra Gardens at Pinjore as a separate nearby outing. For a cable-car experience, confirm the chosen property’s current operations, price and access directly. Kalka is a useful rail gateway, followed by a road transfer; check the live train and onward arrangements instead of relying on a fixed four-hour journey.
9) Pinjore

Pinjore in Haryana is known for Yadavindra Gardens, a terraced garden complex often combined with the Chandigarh–Kalka area. Check current opening hours, entry charges and any evening illumination through Haryana Tourism before planning a late visit. Reconfirm last entry and illumination arrangements for the day of your visit.
Pinjore has hosted garden events, including a mango festival, but check the current announcement before planning around one. Leave time to enjoy the terraces and planting. Kalka or Chandigarh can be useful transport gateways, with onward road travel; confirm the exact route and realistic transfer time.
10) Samode

Samode, near Jaipur, combines village surroundings with ornate heritage architecture. Samode Palace and Samode Bagh belong to the Samode area, while Samode Haveli is in Jaipur’s old city. They are not three neighbouring stops in one village. The property’s palace information and Haveli information clarify the locations. Confirm day-visitor access, dining or stay arrangements directly and allow a realistic Delhi road journey.
This list hardly does justice to a collection of Offbeat Destinations near Delhi but makes a good starting point. We will keep discovering and bringing to you more offbeat places around Delhi in our coming articles.
Planning a Delhi getaway realistically
Distances depend on your Delhi starting point and chosen approach. Check the full return route, allow for city traffic and keep daylight for unfamiliar mountain roads. Confirm the final walk, stairs and parking at the actual property. Use IMD weather warnings and district notices for mountain trips; a year-round destination can still have a temporary road closure.
If you prefer a nature-focused comparison, see quiet places to switch off. Before choosing a demanding trail, read our trek difficulty and readiness guide; heritage travellers can compare historic places around India.
