Nagaland’s rich cultural traditions come together at the Hornbill Festival. The past and the present never came together like it does at this grand fiesta. A display and celebration of the beautiful Naga way of life, this festival is a bedlam of colours where every tribe holds up its culture for the entire world to see and appreciate.

At a glance: The announced 2026 festival dates are 1–10 December, with the main cultural venue at Kisama near Kohima. Book a stay and transport early, then confirm admission, the daily programme and the entry permit required for your nationality.

When and where is the Hornbill Festival celebrated?

Hornbill Festival 2026 is listed for 1–10 December by Nagaland Tourism. The main venue is Naga Heritage Village at Kisama, near Kohima. Cultural performances, food and craft stalls form the heart of the festival, with other events taking place at separate venues. Check the final day-by-day programme before selecting your dates.

Hornbill Festival Tickets & Entry

Entry arrangements and charges can change by edition and event. Check the official festival programme for the current admission price, camera rules and any separately ticketed concerts or activities. Check the current prices before setting your budget.

The Celebration called Hornbill Festival

Hornbill Festival is not only Nagaland’s grandest, most colourful and sparkling carnival but in the whole of north east region of India. It has something or the other in it for every human being. Travellers don’t need an excuse to soak in new experiences but Hornbill is something you just cannot help falling in love with no matter how inexperienced a traveller you are. Let’s see what all the festival has to offer to the different kinds of people we come across every day.

Glimpse of History & Culture at Hornbill Festival

The venue’s morungs, displays and performances provide a glimpse of Naga history and cultural traditions. The World War II museum at Kisama adds context to the Battle of Kohima. Check its opening arrangements and admission separately; a festival visit does not automatically include every exhibition or museum.

Check the museum’s own admission arrangements and opening time before going.

Hornbill Festival for The Shopaholics

At the festival there is a tiny mall or a flea market of sort constructed in the form a gorgeous Bamboo Pavilion just so that you could shop to your heart’s content. You could buy souvenirs for your friends or for yourself just so that the piece is a gentle reminder of your joys at the ‘festival of festivals’. Colourful Naga tribal art is in a class of its own. It is original and very creative. They mostly sell traditional hand-crafted products at the pavilion. Wooden decors to ethnic jewelry, the people have much to offer. Feel free to lose yourself here.

Remember: Do haggle a bit when you intend to make a purchase.

The Book Lovers

Book stalls and literary events have featured regional writers and launches in previous editions. If you enjoy literature, check the current programme rather than expecting a particular author to attend. A conversation at a small stall can be a memorable part of a cultural visit.

If a writer you enjoy is attending, ask politely whether they are signing books.

Living culture and the morungs

What draws many visitors is the chance to encounter the cultural heritage of Nagaland’s communities in one place. The morungs represent participating groups and provide a setting for food, crafts and conversations. Ask before taking close-up photographs, and remember that a festival presentation is only one part of a living culture.

Naga Food for the Food Connoisseurs

Food is a rewarding part of the festival. Different stalls serve dishes associated with their communities, so ask about ingredients, spice levels and vegetarian options rather than assuming that all Naga food is the same. Smoked meats, bamboo shoots and local vegetables are among the flavours you may encounter.

Choose food that is freshly cooked and ask about ingredients if you have allergies or dietary restrictions. Menus vary by stall and year. Food traditions are best approached with curiosity and respect, without treating them as a test of bravery.

Remember: Do taste the rice-beer and let us know if you felt butterflies inside your tummy.

Shows and Sports at Hornbill Festival

There are so many who love to be a part of whatever comes their way. These are the ones who were born to participate and pump life into the various activities and celebrations held across the globe. This festival has ample scope for these enthusiastic souls. You could see some awesome indigenous wrestling matches held here and the best part in that you can even participate in the pork and chilli eating contests here.

Watching a competition can be as enjoyable as participating. Check the current programme and any eligibility requirements before joining.

Music and Dance at Hornbill Festival

The grand spectacle at Hornbill Festival is the various tribes performing their traditional dance to their ancient songs and  tunes should never be missed. There is a time allotted to each tribe and various other tribes from the other states also perform in this fashion. The festival thus becomes a grand platform for showcasing the fabulous diversity and the tremendous unity among all the north-eastern tribes. The performances are held at the open air theater.

Music is another major attraction, from traditional songs to contemporary performances. Concert names, venues, artists and ticketing change between editions. Check the current programme before arranging an evening out, and plan your return transport from the actual concert venue.

Remember: Enjoy till you cannot go on anymore because this will remain with you forever.

Things To Know about Hornbill Festival

Permits for Nagaland

Indian visitors: Check and obtain the required Inner Line Permit through the Government of Nagaland ILP portal before travelling. Use the current online instructions, document list and permitted dates rather than relying on an old downloaded form or office list.

Foreign visitors: The current government portal says a Protected Area Permit (PAP) is mandatory. A relaxation displayed for 1–10 December 2025 was specific to that edition and is not confirmation of a 2026 exemption. Check Nagaland Tourism’s entry-permit guidance and the current government instructions for your nationality, registration requirements and travel dates. Obtain any required approval before making non-refundable plans.

Where to Stay? – Accommodation in Kohima and Kisama

Book accommodation well in advance for the festival. Kohima hotels, homestays and camps around Kisama differ in comfort, access and distance from the main venue. Ask about bathrooms, hot water, parking, the final walk to the room, and transport after evening events. Reconfirm the host’s location and the total price in writing.

Hornbill Festival schedule

Use the official day-by-day programme when it is released, then check venue information boards for changes. The festival runs across ten days, but a specific concert, competition or craft activity may take place only once or at a separate location.

Reaching Kohima

Dimapur is the main air and rail gateway for many visitors, followed by a road journey towards Kohima and Kisama. Check the train’s actual station and your flight’s current operation rather than assuming a direct connection from every major city. Festival traffic can substantially lengthen the final transfer. Arrange a reliable vehicle, allow a buffer and do not build the itinerary around an unconfirmed helicopter service.

This festival is simply a must visit if you want to create a memory benchmark for yourself so that at the end of the day the joy you once had keeps you alive even if nothing else seems to do so.

Planning a first visit

Allow at least a couple of festival days if you want to watch performances without rushing between stalls. Carry layers for cool December evenings, comfortable shoes and a little cash; ask your host about mobile coverage and transport availability. For wider trip ideas, see our India festival guide and practical India travel tips.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to attend all ten days?

No. Choose dates around the performances and activities you most want to see. A shorter stay is possible, with time allowed for arrival and departure.

Can a foreign visitor assume the 2025 permit exemption still applies?

No. A year-specific exemption does not establish the rule for a later edition. Check current government instructions and any required PAP before travelling.
