About Bisanadi National Reserve

Nestled in the remote heartlands of northern Kenya, Bisanadi National Reserve is one of the country’s best-kept safari secrets. Bordering the more popular Meru National Park, Bisanadi stretches across a vast, untamed landscape that few travelers ever get to explore. It’s a rugged paradise for adventurous souls seeking off-the-grid experiences, raw wildlife encounters, and absolute solitude in nature.

If you're looking for an authentic wilderness safari far from the crowds, Bisanadi offers exactly that—and more.

Why Visit Bisanadi?

  • Wild and Remote: With no permanent lodges and limited access, Bisanadi offers a true back-to-nature experience.

  • Big Game Sightings: Home to lions, elephants, buffalos, hippos, crocodiles, and elusive leopards.

  • Birdwatcher’s Paradise: Over 400 bird species, including kingfishers, hornbills, and storks.

  • Untouched Ecosystem: A vital dispersal area for wildlife from Meru and Kora national parks.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to explore Bisanadi is during the dry seasons (June to October and January to February). These months offer easier access through the dirt tracks and higher chances of spotting wildlife congregated around water sources.

Avoid the heavy rains between March and May, as roads become nearly impassable and wildlife can be harder to track in dense vegetation.

Getting There

Bisanadi lies east of Meru National Park and can be accessed via 4x4 vehicles from Meru town. The nearest airstrip is in Meru National Park, with charter flights available from Nairobi or Nanyuki.

Important: There are no roads connecting Meru directly into Bisanadi—visitors must be self-sufficient and prepared for off-road conditions.

What to Do in Bisanadi National Reserve

1. Game Drives

Explore the open savannahs and riverine forests in search of big cats, elephants, and crocodiles. Game drives here are private and unpredictable—perfect for seasoned safari-goers.

2. Birdwatching

Bring your binoculars! The reserve’s wetlands and riverbanks attract a stunning array of birdlife.

3. Photography

With dramatic landscapes and unspoiled nature, Bisanadi is ideal for wildlife and landscape photography.

4. Bush Camping

For true wilderness lovers, Bisanadi allows bush camping at designated spots. This is a rare opportunity to sleep under the stars, surrounded by the sounds of Africa’s wild.

Where to Stay

There are no lodges inside Bisanadi, reinforcing its raw, untouched nature. Most visitors stay in Meru National Park and take guided excursions into Bisanadi. Alternatively, fully equipped mobile camping safaris can be arranged with private tour operators.

Travel Tips

  • Travel with a Guide: This is not a reserve for beginners. A knowledgeable guide or tour company is essential for safety and navigation.

  • Pack for the Bush: Include insect repellent, sun protection, GPS, spare fuel, and lots of water.

  • Permits & Fees: Entry is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). Check current fees and regulations before you go.

  • Respect the Wild: This is true wilderness—keep a safe distance from animals and follow Leave No Trace principles.

Bisanadi National Reserve is not for everyone. It’s for the trailblazers, the nature purists, and the thrill-seekers who want Africa in its rawest form. If you’ve explored Kenya’s well-trodden parks and crave something rare and rugged, Bisanadi will reward you with an unforgettable journey into the wild.
