Commercial Paragliding in Kashmir, around the Srinagar area is done by Karakoram Explorers an adventure sports company registered with the Tourism Department. We have been paragliding in the western Himalayas since 2005 and know the area very well for all its metrological and physical conditions. We have our own private paragliding takeoff point located at Astanmarg, Harwan which is around 10 Km from the Dal lake. This place is the safest and the easiest takeoff point around the vicinity of Srinagar. The paragliding point is about 20 mins drive from the Dal Lake in Srinagar.
The paragliding flight which we offer is categorized as a "High Fly" meaning the altitude differential from the takeoff and landing zone is around 2500 Ft and the flight distance is approx. 4 Km. The entire flight from the takeoff point to the landing zone is around 11-14 minutes depending on the thermal conditions of that particular day. The activity first involves reaching the takeoff site from Harwan pick up point, on a 4WD Scorpio the vehicle takes you to a place 800m below the site and thereafter its a small 15 min walk to the final takeoff point. So, wearing comfortable shoes, sunblock crème and proper sunglasses is recommended. There the pilot prepares you for the flight , you get into your harness, the pilot attaches his harness with your and the glider , just follow the pilots instructions and in just a few steps down the slope you are airborne. On air enjoy the flight and view of the Zabarwan and Pir Panjal mountains, the Dal Lake at a distance and the Dachigam Wildlife Sanctuary.
