Ratangad Fort is one of the favourite forts of Maharaja Shivaji and it has all the perks to earn that title. Situated amidst the beautifully dense forests of Western Ghats, Ratangad Fort is one of the most spectacular architecture in the Sahyadri ranges. The trail to the Fort itself is a magnificent sight to witness. The monsoons are the best season to visit the fort as the trail has pretty waterfalls along its way. Ratangad Fort is a major tourist attraction due to its natural rock peak that has a cavity in it which is the highest point of the fort. The point is called Nedhe or Eye of the Needle. The trek to the fort starts from the base village of Ratanwadi. The river Amrutvahini originates from the Ratangad Fort.
Ratangad Fort is on a comfortable driving distance from both Mumbai and Pune and can be experienced by everyone as it is a relatively easy trek that takes about three to four hours to complete. It is a perfect weekend destination.
