Trip Overview

The surreal Chandertaal, also known as the Moon Lake (from the crescent shape it bears), is at an altitude of 4,300 metres (14,100 ft.) in the Spiti region of Lahoul and Spiti district of the state of Himachal Pradesh. Nestled in the Himalayas, the magnificent Chandertaal is surrounded by the view of Mountains of scree on one side and a spectacular cirque on the other. Chandertaal is about 2.5 km in circumference and is also the main source of river Chandra. The road from Kunzum Pass is accessible only on foot, and it is about 8 km (5.0 mi) from Chandra Taal. Suraj Tal is also accessible Chandra Taal, 30 km (19 mi) away. Vast meadows on the banks of the lake are the camping sites. During springtime, these meadows are carpeted with hundreds of kinds of wildflowers.

The ride to Chandertaal on a bicycle is an experience that can only be felt in order for it to do justice. The path bicycle tyres take traverses through high altitudes and scenic landscapes finally culminating at the surreal Chandertaal. This lake is only open for campers and trekkers from the last week of May to September.

Legend has it that the Chandertaal is the place which is often visited by fairies and hence the surreal feel which is symbolic of Chandertaal. Especially on full moon nights, the sights and sounds at Chandertaal can restore one’s faith in a higher power.

This challenging Manali to Chandertaal cycling trip by road is rewarding as one gets to see some rare flora and fauna en route. Throughout the journey, one is rewarded by magnificent sights of lush green pastures, charming little springs and some most exotic fauna and colours that almost seem larger than life. When after a long bicycle ride you reach the magnificent Chandertaal, that is when we realize that THIS IS WHAT WE LIVE FORJ. This bicycle trip is finally rewarded with camping and spending the night by the shores of the splendid Chandertaal.
