The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva who presides in this temple in the form of “Shiv Ling”. The appearance of Jyotirlinga along with Maha Sakthi (Bhramaramba Devi) is the rare feature and it is one of its natures. Eventhough the exact period of origin of this temple cannot be predicted, the temple was listed in many ancient literatures like Skanda Purana, Mahabharata etc. Adi Shankar, a divine sage wrote Sivananda Lahiri after visiting this temple. As per mythological facts, Sri Rama had installed Sahasralingam in the courtyard of the temple. Similarly, Panchapandava Lingam had been installed by Pandavas in this temple.
