About Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park
The Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park situated in Tamil Nadu pulls in thousands of tourists mainly because of its diverse marine animals and coral reefs. The National Park has been created through an amalgamation of 21 islands found in the Tuticorin and Ramnathpuram. Due to its ornamental value, the Marine Park is often referred to as the “Underwater Tropical Rain forest.”
Seagrass, coral reefs and Mangroves containing salt marshes and algal communities are the major ecosystems that the National Park is composed of. Tourists can also admire the beauty of the beaches and explore the estuaries and broad-leaved tropical forests.
The 21 islands were given the status of a National Park in 1986 and the Marine Park is famous for the cultivation of pearls which takes place at Pinctada Fucata and Pinctada Radiata.
The Marine Park is home to a wide range of Vertebrates, Invertebrates, Turtles, and birds. Throughout the year a variety of migratory birds also visit the National Park from time to time. Lobsters, Seahorses, Blue Whale, Green Turtle, Red Knot, and Stone Plover are some of the many species found here.
Tourists could also visit places like the Pamban Rail Scissors Bridge, Kodandaraman Temple, and Devipatnam to keep them engaged. Glass-bottomed boats can be hired from Mandapam by the visitors but access to islands with-in the park is prohibited. Tourists can visit Dhanushkodi which takes one very close to the Adam's Bridge.
