Overview

The mysterious valleys of Lahaul and Spiti are like gateways to another world. Once we cross Kullu Valley and enter Spiti, we see why. The cold barren landscape seems unbelievable when you recall the lush shrubbery and thick forests of Manali that you just left behind. A majority of the inhabitants of these regions are Buddhists and their culture and traditions stand out as one of the most unique practices in the country. Visit the beautiful monasteries, designed with unique architecture and adorned with ancient murals, thankas, wood carvings and golden images of the Padmasambhava. The inhabitants don’t usually get a lot of visitors so are very warm and courteous to passing travelers. Immerse yourself in the local traditional dances, ballads, folk tales and legends.

This lush landscape is covered with apple orchards and thick forests of oak, deodar pine trees. Sarahan itself is a modest little hamlet but sports and amazing view of the Shrikhand Mahadev Peak. Once known as the ancient capital of Rampur Bushehr, one of the largest princely states in the region, Sarahan is rich in culture and tradition. On arrival, participants can check in at your guesthouse before heading out to visit the Bhimakali Temple, Dharinghati Wildlife sanctuary and the Sarahan peasantry.

Day 03: Sarahan – Chitkul (112 km)

Heading out promptly in the morning, we venture into yet another valley, namely the Sangla Valley. This valley comes straight out of a romantic novel and is flush with breathtaking views, lush green pastures on both sides of the river, meadows spread out close to the river, offering a large variety of beautiful flowers and fruit trees surrounded by huge, barren snow covered ranges. We arrive at Chitkul , the last point of the Sangla valley. Chitkul is a picturesque little village, surrounded by vast fields and high mountain ranges. Visit the village temples and gompas and mingle with the locals before checking in to your home stay for the night.

Day 04: Chitkul – Recong Peo – Kalpa (77 km)
Today, we retrace our steps back into the Sangla Valley. We stop at Sangla, on the way, and pay a visit to The Bering Nag Temple and Buddhist Monastery. Sangla is well known for the colorful and vibrant festivals that take place here during August and September. Nearby, we also find plantations of Saffron, one of the most expensive crops in our country. We take off after a while and move on towards Kalpa. The next region we enter is Recong Peo, the capital of Kinnaur district and one of the least well known and most beautiful districts in Kinnaur district. Due to its proximity to the Tibetan border, the local Hindu population is largely influenced by Buddhist customs and traditions. We arrive at our last stop Kalpa, a beautiful village surrounded with vineyards and sheep farms. Bears and other large predators are known to invade the village lands. The locals, in turn, began breeding large sheep dogs, or Gaddis, as they are famously known. These otherwise gentle creatures have been known to be able to even kill large bears at times. We arrive at our home stay and settle in for the night.

Day 05: Kalpa – Nako (123 km)
After an early breakfast, we take off for Nako, one of the largest and most famous villages in Hingrang Valley. A major source of sustenance for the locals comes from rearing yaks, kine, horses and donkeys. This little village also sports a spectacular view of the Leo Prugil Peak, the highest in the state. Arrive at Nako and explore the village and the beautiful Nako Lake. Take part in the local customs and gain a first hands experience of their unique culture and traditions. Check in at your stay for the night and try out some local delicacies before heading in for the night. .

Day 06: Nako – Tabo (68 km)
After a hearty breakfast, we bid farewell to Nako and move on. Our destination for the day is Tabo, famous for housing one of the oldest monasteries in North India, the Tabo Monastery.  After some local exploring, we check in at our hotel and settle in for the night.

Day 07: Tabo – Kaza via Dhankar and Kungri Monastery (97 km)

We depart after breakfast and head to Kaza. On the way, we cross Dhankar village, the ancient capital and sitting place of the King of Spiti. We also visit the famous Kungri Gompa, a marvel perched at the top of a barren mountain slope. Kaza itself is located at the feet of steep mountain ridges and is famous for the traditional fair held here August. We check in our homestay for dinner and settle in for the night.

Day 08: Kaza – Kibber/ Ki/ Comic back to Kaza (99km)
We spend today in and around Kaza. First, we pay a visit to the famous and beautiful Ki Monastery. This magnificent structure is situated at the top of a pyramid shaped mountain and is an architectural wonder. We move on to visit Kibber, one of the highest consistently inhabitated villages in Asia. The Gompa here is definitely worth a visit. We head back to Kaza for some local exploring before heading back to our hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 09; Kaza – Chandertaal (116 km)
We edge further along to the end days of our journey. Ride through numerous villages and mount the awe inspiring Kunzum Pass, before reaching the mystical Chandertaal Lake. ‘The Moon Lake’ or Chander Taal, is aptly named after its shape which resembles a half moon. The treat of nature is surrounded by lush green plains. We set up camp here by the lake for the night. Enjoy the warmth of a bonfire under a crystal clear starry night. Enjoy good food and company before settling in for the night.

Day 10; Chandertaal – Manali (110 km)
