Overview

Considered as one of the easier treks in Himachal Pradesh, but the Hampta Pass will definitely leave you in awe of its beautiful setting and views. Scenic landscapes include green meadows, glacial valleys and a pass crossing that will give you goosebumps.

Trek starts around the 2nd week in June, it's only by this time that the routes open up for trekking. On an average the trek takes about 4 days; to make it more rewarding 1 more day is added to include breathtaking Chandrataal - A high altitude lake few hours from Chatru. It's here when you have the highest probability of encountering snow!

Best months for the trek will be Mid-June onwards till October.

Itinerary:

Day 1:  Manali to Chika via Jobra by Road (10,100 ft)

Report to the Base Camp at Manali by 10 am. After registration and wholesome breakfast, we will transfer you to Jobra– the last road head for the trek after crossing River Beas by Jeep or Car. Prini village takes you up through 42 hairpin bends and Jobra is the endpoint. Your trek started at 9800 feet which will gain quite an altitude from Manali. Cross the road and take the small path into the forest. You will also find other variety of trees like maple, deodar, toss and oak. The sight is refreshing. The slope that is supposed to be climbed is an easy one and not very steep. 20 minutes into the trek, you will reach a bend that overlooks a lush green meadow strewed with small rocks. Enjoy the surrounding for a couple of minutes and head towards the meadow. The Rani nallah/water stream comes into view which flows directly in between the meadow. You will also see few sheep and cows grazing in the field. The sight looks exactly as if taken out from the fairy tale. You can pass through the meadow or climb up the hill on the left-hand side. Either way, you will reach Chika which is at the end of the vast meadow. But, climbing the hill and descending down to Chika is a better and easier route. Chika campsite is a huge and spacious patch of green. The Rani Nallah flowing in the middle makes this place perfect for setting up the tents. Overnight stay in camps at Chika

Day 2: Chika to Balu Ka Gera (11,900 ft - 5-6 hr Easy trek)

Balu Ka Gera is a flat ground amidst the mountains at an elevation of 11,900 ft. Today’s trail will take you through Jwara- a beautiful scenic sheltered valley. After an early breakfast, the trek begins from Chikka and walk along the banks of the river to the left. The route will encompass several small waterfalls, lush green meadows and Dhauladhar peaks will be your constant company throughout the hiking hours. We set up our camps and relax for the rest of the day as we slowly reach an altitude of almost 11000 ft. Dinner and overnight stay at the camps at Balu ka Gera.

Day 3: Balu ka Gera – Hampta Pass (14,100 ft) – Shia Goru (13,800 ft - 8-9 hr Moderate trek)

This is the most challenging trip of all. It is a long trek started around 7 AM (approx 4-5 hours to reach the top) Today’s trek can be split into two stages. The climb to Hampta Pass which is fairly steep followed by a steep descent to Shea Goru. Now at 14,100 ft., you are on top of Hampta Pass with breathtaking views that will leave you in awe. You will want to take a small break on the top of the pass to make it your target to reach the pass by lunchtime, have lunch there and then start the descent.

Trek from the mountains of Balu Ka Gera along the river for an hour when the gradient begins, the trail leads you to Hampta pass. In some time, you will see the first plateau, the magnificent Deo Tibba peak right in front. Climb up the ridges to get close to Hampta Pass. The steep climbing with concentration and effort will be worth the time at the end. The temperature at that time can vary according to the snow condition.

Day 4:  Trek from Shia Goru to Chatru & Drive to Chandartal (14,100 ft - 4 hr Trek / 2 hr Drive)

You will cover Sia Goru to Chatru by walking and it will take apparently 4 hours of easy downhill trek. At an altitude of 12,900 ft and 11,000 ft, Sia Goru and Chatru is a gentle downhill trek from Shea Goru. The trail is along the riverside valley between the mountain ranges. Chatru is not so far from the valley. There can be no vegetation seen on this mountain. The Chandra River flowing below and a road that goes by its side will be visible. More than two Glaciers comes next which are to be crossed. The other side of the Glacier is Chatru. A location will be chosen which has the river running around. Chatru is a magnificent camping site; it is a consensus of the three passes, Hampta, Rohtang and Spiti. You can also camp at the Chandratal camping site which has better sceneries. The location is just about another two hours.

There will be an overnight Stay at Chandartal/Manali.  Drive to Chandratal is depends upon the weather/road conditions.

The excursion to Chandratal is dependent on weather/ road conditions. If the excursion is cancelled, you are expected to be in Manali by 4 pm.

Day 5 - Drive from Chandra Tal to Manali via Rohtang Pass.

Rohtang Pass, Trip ends here

It is the last day of the trek and the adventures from Hampta pass and Chandratal camping. Right after breakfast, traverse the high altitude passes that connect the humid Kullu Valley and the arid Lahaul and Spiti Valley. To the end of the whole adventure, you will arrive at Manali and get back to home with full of memories. Most of the Volvo starts onward journey from Manali after 04:00 PM so you can plan to explore accordingly.

The Big NO

  • No denim or jeans – not suited for this trek.
  • Snacks, colas, alcohol and personal food – No need to overburden yourself with food. Do not carry any disposable plastic bottles like (Bisleri, Aquafina), plastic wrapped/packaged items.
  • Do not bring any non bio degradable material.
  • After packing, weigh your gear. It should be in the range of 8-10 kg – preferably on the lighter side. Anything heavier, you will need to iterate and remove what is not essential.
  • Carry light and what is essential. As an example, toothpaste should be bought in small size (that can last you 10 days).
  • Some general advice about clothing: To protect yourself from cold, dressing in layers is the mantra. Two T-shirts worn one over the other is warmer than a T-shirt that is thick. 3 T-shirts worn one over the other is as good as a full sweater. This is just a guideline. If you are prone to cold carry extra warm clothing.
  • Please bring your own USB Pen drive for videos and images
