India Andhra Pradesh Srisailam Dam

About Srisailam Dam

India’s third largest Hydroelectric Project, Srisailam dam was constructed across River Krishna when it flows through Srisailam of Kurnool District. In a deep canyon of Nallamala Hills, the dam was constructed of 512 m long and 145 m height. Perched at an altitude of 300 m above sea level, Srisailam dam has 12 radial crest Gates. Initialized around 1960s, power project was established across River Krishna. However the dam was completed in 1981. The dam actually serves multi-purposely like Hydro-electric power generation, fulfills the catchment area with water, irrigation for Kurnool and Kaddapa districts. At present condition, the dam water is not used for power generation instead; excess water which remains after filling the Srisailam Reservoir is allowed to enter the Nagarjunasagar Reservoir for power generation.
