About Mulagandha Kuti Vihar Sarnath
Mulagandha Kuti Vihar or Mulagandhakuti Vihara is situated in the heart of the city. It is believed by the archaeologists that the Stupa contains the bones of the Buddha. The magnificent monument was constructed during Ashoka’s reign. Jagat Singh destroyed the stupa in 1794 to obtain bricks for construction. During the destruction, he found out a chest containing bones and gems. It is said that he disposed off the contains in the river Ganga. The chest is presently kept for display at the Indian Museum, Kolkata. There are a number of other attractions are the Burmese, Chinese and Jain temples nearby.
