About Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Periyar National Park or Wildlife Sanctuary is a famous elephant and tiger reserve and is also often called "Thekkady". Rich in both flora and fauna is home toa diverse variety of plants of which 350 plants have mediacal importance,the park also plays home to 62 mammals, 320 different kinds of birds, 45 reptiles and as many as 160 different types of insects,including some very vibrantly colored butterflies.
The reserve is specially famous for its sight of massive elephants as seen playing in the periyar river. Boat rides are available for a glimpse of the reserve while wading through the river waters. It is suggested that tourists visit early in the morning to be able to spot more wildlife. It is open all round the year but best time to visir is between may and september.
