The beautiful Nandi Hills or Nandi Betta or Nandi Durga, is a popular weekend getaway for the people of Bangalore. Situated in the Chickballapur district of Karnataka, it lies at about 60 KMs from Bangalore. Famous for its sunrise/sunset you can find a huge crowd from Bangalore here on weekends. Attractions here include, a garden maintained by the Horticulture Department of Karnataka, the fort(Nandi Durga) built by Tipu Sultan, the 1300 year old Dravidian style Nandi Temple, an ancient Shiva-Parvati temple, Tipu's Drop.
Nandi hills is also a cyclists' paradise, around 400m altitude gain in ~7km, it offers a very good training spot. Cyclists from Bangalore storm Nandi Hills on weekends and holidays. Nandi Hills is at a height of approximately 1478m from mean sea level, and hence boasts of pleasant weather all the year round. Because of this and its location (proximity to Bangalore and Bangalore International Airport) there a lot of commercial and residential ventures underway.
Also, you will find one of the largest and best vineyards of India, the Grover vineyards, nearby. At over 410 acres it’s one of the finest. There are extensive wine trails across the property, and it's also possible to visit the winery's barrel room. Three and a half hour tour followed by lunch start daily at 10.30 a.m., and it includes, wine tasting, visit to winery and a lunch.
