About Nandankanan Zoological Park
The word “Nandankanan” means the imaginary beauty of the celestial garden. The Nandankanan Zoo is located in the center of the dense green Chandaka Forest, houses some of the rarest species of animals. The Zoological Park comprises of a botanical Garden, a sanctuary and a zoo. The zoo is situated nearby the dense Chandaka forest. Inside the zoo you can come across huge lake called Kanjia Lake spreading over 134 acres.
The zoo dwells over 70 kinds of mammals, 19 varieties of reptiles and 80 species of birds. Nandankanan zoo is much popular for its white tiger population. Asiatic Lion, Indian Crocodilians, Nilgiri Langur, mouse deer etc are other few endangered animals. Aquaria of the zoo houses enormous fresh water fishes. Reptiles section is designed as cave like model. This zoo also serves as a breeding center for white tiger, gharials and black panthers.
The tourist can enjoy boating and forest safaris at the park. The best time to visit is from July to October. In 2008, the zoo has started to adopt an animal program to raise money for animal care at the zoo.
