Detailed Overview

Har Ki Dun, which means ‘Valley of Gods’ is situated deep inside Govind Pashu National park. During a trek to Har Ki Dun, we will be passing through ancient villages like Gangad and Osla, which are more than 300 years old. After you reach Har Ki Dun, you can spend three days exploring places like Jaundhar glacier, Hata or Marinda Tal.

For the trek, we will drive from Dehradun to Sankri. And after spending a night there we will start the trek from Taluka, which is just an hour away from Sankri. From there, the trek winds up alongside the Tons River through the scenic villages of Gangad and Osla. Har-ki-dun has numerous camping places and one forest guesthouses. Some days you can even stay in huts along with native people.

Itinerary

Day-1: Dehradun to Sankri - 8 hrs drive

We will start early from Dehradun (reporting time: 6:30 am) and reach the village of Sankri by evening. During the drive, we will be passing through the Govind Pashu National Park after we cross a check post at Netwar. After the journey, we will spend the rest of the night in a guest house or in camps.

Day-2: Sankri to Osla (2200 m) - 1h drive + 5-6 hrs trek

After breakfast, we will drive from Sankri to Taluka. It will be a one hour ride through some rough terrains. The trek commences from Taluka. Our trail will be beside the furious river Tons, and through the woods filled with walnut, pine and other trees. It will be a pleasant walk with local villagers and beautiful views greeting you.

Our trek cross path over a few streams which merge with Tons. After a few hours of walk, you will be able to see the village of Gangad towards the left, across the river. From there, we continue our hike and after about an hour’s walk, you can see the village of Osla. Seema is a tiny settlement opposite to the river from Osla. We will set camp here or stay in a hut with a local family.

Day-3: Osla to Har-ki-Dun (3510 m) – 4-5 hrs

From Osla, our trail will gradually rise higher and pass through bushes of flowers like orchids, fleece and sunflowers. We will be climbing high above the confluence of Tons river and the river from Ruinsara valley.

After trekking higher up along the left side of Tons River, we will camp at a very good spot in Har Ki Dun, located at the foot of two valleys, one from Jaundhar glacier and the other from beyond the Hata glacier.

Day-4: Explore Har ki Dun (day-1)

You can explore the vast open meadows following the course of the Tons river. Further ahead of the meadows you can walk among the forests of Himalayan birch (Bhojpatra trees) or get a closer glimpse of the Jaundhar glacier and Swargarohini peak.

Day-5: Explore Har ki Dun (day-2)

The little-known valley of Hata can be explored which lies in between the above two valleys. It also has some large meadows and a close view of the Hata glacier.

Day-6: Explore Har Ki Dun (day-3)

One can visit the Marinda Tal, just 2 km away from Har ki Dun. It is small glacial lake formed by a huge rock obstructing the flow of the river which flows down from Borasu pass. The trail ahead leads to the pass.

Day-7: Back to Osla – 3-4 hrs

The trek back to Osla will be easy. After reaching there, you can wander around in the village, interact with the locals and know more about the Garhwali culture. Here also, we can either set up a camp or stay with a local family.

Day-8: Osla to Sankri – 4-5 hrs trek + 1 hrs drive

We bid farewell to the villagers of Osla in the early morning and hike till Taluka. From Taluka, you will be transported back to Sankri, where we will spend the rest of the day in camps or guest house.

Day-9: Sankri to Dehradun – 8 hrs drive

This will be the last day of our trek. We will leave Sankri and reach Dehradun by late afternoon.
