About Kottarakkara
Kottarakkara is a small town located at 27kms from the Kollam city. What is so special about this small town is that it is the birthplace of the famous dance drama Kathakali which flourished during the 19th century in this town. The specialty doesn’t end with that; Kottarakkara literally means land of palaces. This small town once was the land of palaces of kings of Kerala; the oldest structure dating back to the 14th century. The places of interest include temples like the shrine of Ganapathy, Mahadeva temple and the Kulasekharanellor Sree Bhadarkali temple. Other than the Hindu temples this place is considered the epicenter of Malankara Orthodox churches.
Today, this place has an interesting mix of temples, churches, mosques, and palaces which reflect a rich artistic history that has played a significant role in influencing the culture of this region. Although this town boasts unique history and historical structures it attracts relatively less tourists. The main visitors here come to visit the famous temple of Lord Ganesha. A visit to Kottarakkara can be clubbed with other sightseeing places in and around Kollam.
