Perched at an altitude of 445 meters above sea level, Karnala Hillock is of Thumb Shaped. The bird sanctuary was established around this thumb shaped peak in around 1968. In this sanctuary which spreads over 4 square kilometer, bird watchers can come across nearly 147 species of resident birds whereas the count of migratory species is of 37. Two of the rare species which can be spotted in Karnala Bird Sanctuary are Ashy Minimet and Spotted heart woodpecker. The other species are Paradise Fly catcher, Magpie robin, Malabar Whistling Trush etc. You can spot the professional mountain climbers often in Karnala Bird Sanctuary.
