About Samayapuram Mariamman Temple
Mariamman, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, is considered to be most sacred and powerful version of Shakti Devi. Samayapuram Mariamman Temple dates back to 18th century and was built by King Vijayaraya Chakaravarti. As per legend, the idol of Mariamman was initially belongs to Sri Ranganathar Temple of Srirangam, later was removed as one of the main priest felt that the goddess caused illness to him. Then the Idol was bought a devotee to Samayapuram. Later during Vijayanagara Empire, a temple was built for Mariamman. Devotees believe that the Goddess will cure all illness and fulfill all their wishes. Many devotees donate the silver or steel impressions of human parts which got illness as an offering in temple donation box, so that the Goddess will cure the illness. Tourists can see the main deity of Mariamman in sanctum sanctorum right from the main entrance unlike in other Hindu Temples.
