About Kharagpur
Kharagpur is one of the most industrious, technologically advanced and educationally productive cities in the state of West Bengal. Historically, Kharagpur was a part of Hijli Kingdom which was ruled by Taj Khan who was the disciple of Guru Peer Mackdram Sha Chisti. The old Shiva temple Khargeswar, located at Kharagpur was established by King Kharag Singh Pal and was named after him .Later on this place was named after this temple. This land has a mythological importance too .It was believed that Hiramba (demon king )was killed by Bhim at the very place during a fight between them due to Bhim’s love for Hirimba who was Hiramba’s sister (reference from Mahabharata -The Great Hindu Epic ). This temple is said to be built on the same place where this fight had happened.
Kharagpur is famous for - being the 1st city in India to have an IIT (Indian Institute of Technology), for having the biggest railway workshop along with the longest railway platform in the whole of India, for its well-connected routes with all major cities and towns by air (Netaji Subash Chandra Bose International Airport Kolkata) and road. The places one can visit in this gorgeous city are - Baripada, Digha Beach and Bishnupur.
