The Parakrama Samudra, an ancient reservoir is one of the most well known sites of the city, as its functionality yet irrigates acres of paddy land. The city is a home to age-old, native monkeys who have been thriving there long before humans occupied the area. Like most other Sri Lankan towns, this city also consists of a few national parks, including Minneriya, which is great location for spotting elephants and rare bird species. Hence, Polonnaruwa delivers attractions for all types of tourists, be it the history or nature lovers.
