About Ryewood
Close to Lonavala, this is a majestic garden area. Owned by the state governments Forest Department, the Rye gardens has a number of features. The name Ryewood is attributed to Mr. Rye, the English army officer who lived here for a number of years, although some of the locals will tell you that it derives from the word ‘Rai’ meaning thick forest. The park has some splendid tree samples, many dating back hundreds of years. Many of the species brought in when it was a botanical garden.
