Chandannagar or ‘Chandernagore’ as the name says is derived from the shape of the bank of the river Ganges which is bent like a half moon implying moon for ‘chandan’. Another reason is that there is a temple of Goddess 'Chandi'. It was established by French in 17th century and in 18th century Dupleix was appointed as governor for the city. Dupleix palace or institute de cahndannagor is the museum that has preserved French antiques like painting (that of Mughal courts), artecrafts and clay model utensils of French times. Belonging and items of Jogendra Nath who fought in world war has also been donated and stored at this very museum. Other places of tourist importance are Chandan Nagar strand, French cemetery, Sacred Heart Church. Chandan Nagar is 37 km by road from Kolkata. Taxis and private cars go to Chandannagore.
